Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if my child needs therapy?
Children and teens don't need to be in crisis to benefit from therapy. Parents often seek support when anxiety, emotional outbursts, avoidance, attention difficulties, social challenges, or changes in mood begin interfering with a child's happiness or functioning at home, at school, or with peers. An initial consultation can help determine whether therapy would be beneficial and what type of support may be most appropriate.
Do you treat children with both anxiety and ADHD?
Yes. Anxiety and ADHD frequently occur together, and it can sometimes be difficult for parents to determine which is driving a particular behavior. Our therapists frequently work with children and adolescents who have overlapping anxiety, attention, executive functioning, and emotional regulation difficulties.
Are parents involved in their child's therapy?
Yes, although the amount of parent involvement depends on the child's age and individual needs. With younger children, parents typically play a significant role in treatment. As children become older and require greater privacy and independence, parent involvement may shift toward periodic check-ins and parent consultation.
Can you help with school refusal or school anxiety?
Yes. We work with children and adolescents experiencing school anxiety, avoidance, and school refusal.Treatment may include individual therapy, parent support, gradual exposure and return-to-school planning, and collaboration with the school or other providers when appropriate.
What if my child doesn't like talking about feelings?
That's very common.Children do not have to sit on a couch and talk about their feelings for an entire session to benefit from therapy. We use developmentally appropriate activities, games, play, creativity, skill-building, and conversation to help children engage in ways that feel manageable.
Do you accept insurance?
Popkin Psychology Group is an out-of-network practice. Families pay for sessions directly, and we submit out-of-network insurance claims on their behalf so they do not have to manage the paperwork themselves.Reimbursement varies depending on each family's individual out-of-network benefits.
What ages do you work with?
Our practice primarily works with children as young as 4 years old, adolescents, young adults, and parents. We match families with the clinician who is best suited to the child's age, concerns, and treatment needs.
